About Pilates mat classes.
Joseph Pilates (1880-1967) developed and taught a series of exercises to improve overall health and well-being that he called "Contrology". His exercises focus on strengthening the core muscles - the muscles that support the back and midsection. Over the years his students have refined the exercises based on studies of kinesiology, anatomy and physical therapy. With its emphasis on breathing, concentration, center, precision, flow and control, Pilates has evolved into an excellent form of exercise for individuals with medical complications. Pilates can be taught as a part of the Physical Therapy plan of care to help achieve specific goals or as part of an overall fitness program.
Austin Re-Fit offers Pilates mat exercises that are performed on the floor or firm bed in the seated position, or lying on the back, stomach or side. All exercises are non-impact and can be modified based on an individual's needs. Pilates focuses on strengthening the core muscles that surround the midsection of the body. A strong core will enable one to perform daily tasks safely and efficiently, reducing the chance of injury. The exercises improve breathing, body awareness and posture. When combined with a cardiovascular program, an individual can achieve a well-balanced level of fitness.
Raquel Currah, PT completed her Pilates mat teacher training with Balanced Body University (BBU).
